New home construction starts increased by a strong 8.2% in April and new building permits permit applications gained 4.9% according to the U.S. Department of Commerce.

The increase in overall April housing starts was the largest monthly increase since January 2006, when a housing starts rose 14%. The gain in building permits was the largest since December 2006, a 6.7% gain.
